QGROUP Foundation partners with MOBSE to offer UTG Scholarships

The Qgroup Foundation since it’s registration in 2016 as the philanthropic arm of the Qgroup of companies, has put in place several initiatives and interventions with the aim of contributing to National Development.
The foundation identified certain specific needs in different sectors mainly in Health and Education and provides services needed across the country. As a result, the QGroup Foundation in 2018, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MOBSE).

The MoU is based on active dialogue and focused interventions with the aim to encourage young Gambians to venture into Mathematics, Sciences, and ICT-related programs at the University of The Gambia (UTG).
Consequently, the QGroup Foundation, in partnership with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE), established a scholarship program for students in the Basic Education Cycle (Upper Basic and Senior Secondary Schools). This partnership was announced by the Executive Director of the Q-group Foundation, Mrs Isatou Jah, and the Permanent Secretary of MoBSE, Mr Louis Moses Mendy at a press conference on the 22nd October.

One of the main objectives of the programme is to identify high-achieving students from low socio-economic backgrounds and provide them with funding to study at the UTG in STEM related fields.

Annually, ten deserving students will be awarded a scholarship and the awards will be distributed equitably across the seven Regional Education Directorates. Tuition fees and free Internet access for the entire duration of the study program will be provided to successful candidates.

The scope of the sensitisation sessions will include raising awareness on career options in science and technology, with a focus on improving students’ engagement with information and communication technology-related courses.

As per the requirements for the scholarship program, interested candidates must register in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and must gain admission to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in any of the following courses at the University of The Gambia before applying for the scholarship:

  • Computer Science or Information Systems
  • Planning and Design
  • Mathematics and Data Science
  • Physics, Biology and Chemistry

The call for scholarship application will be announced on the QGroup Foundation and MoBSE websites and Regional Directorates, with detailed information on the eligibility criteria after the 2021 Grade 12 examination results are published.
